Teeth Veneers Can Last For Many Years With These Tips

Posted on

Veneers are an effective cosmetic dentistry solution for a variety of issues that people face with their teeth. For example, veneers can be used to correct chipped, discolored or crooked teeth. Think of veneers as semi-permanent tooth caps that aid in helping people to have beautiful teeth without undergoing extensive corrective treatments such as orthodontics. Veneers can remain intact for 20 or more years, and caring for them properly can help to ensure they last as long as possible. The following are proactive measures that can be taken to preserve veneers.

Wear a mouth guard as needed.

If you actively participate in contact sports or make a lifestyle change that includes contact sports, you need to inform your dentist. They can assist with fitting you with a mouth guard to protect your veneers. Participating in these sports without a mouth guard could result in damage to your veneers in the event of mouth trauma.

Teeth grinding is another circumstance that could damage veneers. Wearing a mouth guard  when you sleep will protect your veneers against damages if you grind your teeth.

Preserve your oral health.

Since veneers are a cosmetic solution, they offer patients the appearance of beautiful teeth. You will still need to ensure that you are protecting your gums and surrounding teeth by brushing after meals and flossing and brushing before bed. Ensure that you go to your dentist every six months, which will aid in determining if any issues such as gum inflammation or microscopic damages to your veneers are present. An oral prophylaxis during your dental visits will keep surrounding teeth healthy and remove extrinsic stains.

Be mindful of what you put in your mouth.

A good rule for people who have veneers to follow is to only bite food. This means that bad habits such as nail biting or nibbling on pencils or pens should be avoided. Repeatedly engaging in these habits exerts unnecessary pressure on veneers, which may eventually result in them chipping or cracking.

Using tobacco products or consuming certain foods and drinks could result in stains on your veneers. Tobacco usage has also been linked to gum disease, which can cause teeth to fall out if left untreated. Veneers are constructed to repel stains, but as veneers age, they could become more vulnerable to staining. This is why it is best to avoid or limit the consumption of foods and beverages that are known to stain teeth. Examples of foods are soy or tomato-based sauces, red wine, strawberries or coffee.

A cosmetic dentist is the best resource to use if you have concerns about taking care of your veneers. They can offer more tips to extend the life of your veneers.
